Calorie Level for Maintenance/Weight Loss?
Recently I have been hit with the fitness bug fairly hard and would really like to use this opportunity to get the nutritional part of fitness in good working order. I began to calculate my calories and track what I have eaten for the last few days.
The amount of calories I’m calculating seems to be high. Maybe I just need more than I thought I did…so here’s my calculations.
Using the Harris-Benedict Formula
66 + (13.7 x wt in kg) + (5 x ht in cm) – (6.8 x age)
weight: 205lbs = 93.18kg
height: 70.5in = 179.07cm
age: 26
66 + (13.7 x 93.18) + (5 x 179.07) – (6.8 x 26)
66 + 1276.566 + 895.35 – 176.8 = 2061.116 calories to maintain
now, I need to multiply that number by an activity multiplier (1.55 for me) = 3194.73
just seems like an insane amount of calories needed to maintain since my goal is to try and lose an average of a pound per week over the next 12 weeks, i am skeptical about downing that many calories (minus an amount to create a deficit).
Any feedback is appreciated.

Since it looks like you’re going to be at a high activity level, then yes – it doesn’t seem like too much. I know, it doesn’t seem possible, but I’ve been eating 2000 calories a day and working out 15-30 minutes daily and losing 1lb a week. It goes against the common ‘diet’ thoughts that you need to starve yourself to lose weight. On "The Biggest Loser", they are trying to lose a significant amount of weight in a relatively short time.
I’ve been doing my plan through sparkpeople.com. It’s a free site, so you can see for yourself if this method works for you.
