Day 512-Sleep (SCIENCE FRIDAY)

Now everyone will tell you they know that sleep is important, but most people still don’t get enough of it. But the recommended amount of sleep for an adult is 6-10 hours. And repeated functioning on any less will cause your brain to do some terrible things. Like start to eat itself according to a new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience. I’ll save the boring science you can go to the page if you want to read more, or read a more friendly version here at IFLScience. But the general jist of it is that phagocytes the garbage men of the body go into hyperdrive and can’t distinguish between what cells are ready to be digested and which ones aren’t.

Other reasons to get enough sleep are mood, sleep has an intense affect on your mood. Too little sleep can make you irritable and actually increase your stress even though most people are sleep deprived because they feel like they don’t have enough time in the day. Getting enough sleep has a huge effect on your general well being and happiness.

Several aids are out there for helping get enough sleep, obviously there are medicines doctors can prescribe if you feel like your lack of sleep is intense enough there is nothing wrong with seeking help. But there are a few tricks to start with, aromatherapy. Now I don’t buy into essential oils because they are super concentrated and can actually be dangerous to apply directly to your skin. But if in a lotion like at Sleep at Bath and Body Works it is extremely effective, it uses lavender. I use the Energy one and it’s so helpful for waking up in the morning which uses citrus.
