Will this planned exercise "regime" help me to "tone up" a bit?

I’m a 21 year old guy – 5ft 8 and 8.5 – 9 stone (120 – 125lb). I haven’t been particularly active lately, and I haven’t been eating brilliantly either. I suppose it’s just my metabolism that’s keeping me from putting on weight. Anyway, in an attempt to save myself some money, I’m planning to start walking to and from university. I’m up at university four days every week this semester, and it takes me about an hour and a half to get there, and an hour and a half to get back home – that’s with me walking at a pace which varies between moderate and brisk. Parts of the journey are mildly uphill, parts are mildly downhill, and parts are level. So I’ll be walking for three hours a day, four days a week – maybe even five days, on weeks when I need to do a lot of work up on campus.

What’s more, a few days ago I started a daily upper body workout with weights, albeit 2.5kg ones, involving bench presses, chest flies, shoulder flies, triceps extensions and biceps curls (between 20 and 30 reps, depending on how much I can manage on the day). I also started doing abdominal crunches – fifty a day – a few days ago.

How much will this "regime" impact on my body, in terms of weight loss, leanness, "toning" etc? I’m a slim, not-at-all-muscly person, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to increase my muscle mass a bit and lose a bit of body fat. Will this exercise bring about a difference in my body (I ought to note that I’m only hoping to look a bit leaner and more "toned"), and if so, how long do you think it’ll take before I’ll notice any change?
I meant to say, also, that over the past couple of days I’ve been eating a lot better than I had been for the past while – more fruit and vegetables, more water, less fatty, unhealthy stuff such as crisps, chocolate etc. Obviously I intend to keep this up.

Good weight loss plan?

I began my diet Nov 06 and I weighed 180 lbs. Taebo & atkins helped me lose a good amount of weight. Then I hit a plateau (got depressed and then basically quit working out as hard but have maintained all the weight off). I weigh 149 lbs now. I want to lose about 25 more lbs (i’m 5’4").

So I started my diet again. I run 1 mile at 5.0//5.2 mph on the treadmill for the past couple of days. I also do lots of crunches and occasionally jump on the elliptical for 10 minutes. The running is extremely difficult, but I somehow make it and run 1 mile without stopping. I also use weights at home and do bicep/tricep exercises throughout the day. My diet consists of mainly vegetables and now I’m thinking about incorporating some foods that are high in fiber.

My question is … Is this an effective plan for weight loss? Is 1 mile on the treadmill everyday enough cardio? I want to lose 15 lbs by new years… Is that feasible?

Will this regime help me lose weight and "tone up" a bit? And how long before I'll notice a difference?

I’m a 21 year old guy – 5ft 8 and 8.5 – 9 stone (120 – 125lb). I haven’t been particularly active lately, and I haven’t been eating brilliantly either. I suppose it’s just my metabolism that’s keeping me from putting on weight. Anyway, in an attempt to save myself some money, I’m planning to start walking to and from university. I’m up at university four days every week this semester, and it takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there, and an hour and fifteen minutes to get back home – that’s with me walking at a pace which varies between moderate and brisk. Parts of the journey are mildly uphill, parts are mildly downhill, and parts are level. So I’ll be walking for three hours a day, four days a week – maybe even five days, on weeks when I need to do a lot of work up on campus. I’m even considering doing the walk on Saturdays and Sundays too.

What’s more, from tomorrow I’m going to start a daily upper body workout with weights, albeit 2.5kg ones, involving bench presses, chest flies, shoulder flies, triceps extensions and biceps curls (between 20 and 30 reps, depending on how much I can manage on the day). I’m also going to start doing abdominal crunches – fifty a day, I hope.

Oh, and food. Over the past couple of days I’ve been eating a lot better than I had been for the past while – more fruit and vegetables, more water, no fatty, unhealthy stuff such as crisps, chocolate etc. Obviously I intend to keep this up. More specifically, from tomorrow onwards I’ll be eating around 1200 calories a day. Also, I don’t eat meat – I eat Quorn, the meat subsitute, instead.

How much will this regime impact on my body, in terms of weight loss, leanness, "toning" etc? I’m a slim, not-at-all-muscly person, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to increase my muscle mass a little bit (but only a little bit) and lose some body fat. Will this exercise bring about a difference in my body (I ought to note that I’m only hoping to look a bit leaner and more "toned"), and if so, how long do you think it’ll take before I’ll notice any change? Will I notice a difference at the end of the week, or will it be a fortnight, a month or even longer than that before I’ll be able to observe any visible change?
